9th Infantry Division: Invasion of Normandy Series: Volume IX
The 9th Infantry Division, also known as “The Varsity”, was one of the immediate follow-up American Infantry Divisions used in the invasion of France in early June. The division would land in the Utah Beach sector, and quickly move to support the actions of the VII Corps bridgehead as well as the capture of Cherbourg. The contents of this video show the action as was recorded by the 165th and 166th Signal Photo Companies, during this historic operation. The footage in this video is intended to be strictly that of the 9th Infantry Division and only shows other unit footage when two or more units are intertwined. This video contains footage covering the time from June 6, 1944, when the division was still in England, to August 17, 1944 when the 9th Division takes part in the closing of the Falaise Gap. Images included on this research video are soldiers of the 9th Infantry Division as they convoy in England to load ships for the invasion. Men land at Utah Beach and pass a German bunker being used as a communication post. GIs of the 9th liberate small towns on the move toward Cherbourg. Men of the 39th Inf. Reg. take many POWs as they enter Cherbourg. General Collins and commanders of VII Corps Divisions present Cherbourg back to French in a ceremony. German POWs are searched and processed by MPs of the 9th Div. Troops of the 9th move south to take part in the breakout of “Operation Cobra” and take the town of Marigny, France. Finally watch the 9th move through hedgerows as they fire mortars when attacking on the southern side of the Falaise Gap.
