101st Airborne Division: Invasion of Normandy Series: Volume XVI

The “Screaming Eagles” of the 101st Airborne Division was just 1 of only 2 American parachute infantry divisions used in the invasion of France on June 6th 1944. The contents of this video show the action as was recorded by the 165th and 166th Signal Companies, during this historic operation. The footage represented in this video is intended to be strictly that of the 101st Airborne Division and only shows other unit footage when two or more units are intertwined. This video covers from June 5th , the day before the invasion, as the 101st completes it’s final preparations in England to the time that the Division was returned to England in mid July 1944, after a successful deployment. All of the Parachute Infantry Regiments, Glider Infantry, and Engineers are represented here. Images included on this video are of soldiers of the 101st loading gliders, helping each other suit up before loading the jump planes, and attaching equipment to planes. Gen. Eisenhower visits the 101st prior to the troops loading transports for the invasion. Then the first days of the invasion are shown as mixed units of the 82nd and 101st hold towns like St. Mere Eglise and St. Marcouf. Many images show wounded men being attended to at the 128th Evacuation Hospital and of officers questioning German POWs. The key town of Carentan is represented quite generously as the GIs of the 101st walk through town after it’s capture and celebrate with the local French people. There is also coverage of the awards ceremonies held for the Division in the town square. Many men including General Taylor receive the Silver Star. Finally, after the return to England, “Ike” awards the men of the 101st at a ceremony in August 1944. Enjoy these up close shots of equipment, vehicles, uniforms, helmet markings, and of the faces of the men themselves on these candid reels of history. Add To Cart
