82nd Airborne Division: Invasion of Normandy Series: Volume XIV

The 82nd Airborne Division, also know as the “All-Americans” was just 1 of only 2 American parachute infantry divisions used in the invasion of France on June 6th 1944. The contents of this video show the action as was recorded by the 165th and 166th Signal Companies, during this historic operation. The footage represented in this video is intended to be strictly that of the 82nd Airborne Division and only shows other unit footage when two or more units are intertwined. This video covers from May 27th , a few days before the invasion, as the 82nd relaxes and is reviewed by Gen. Gavin in England to the time that the Division was returned to England in July 1944, after a successful deployment. The Parachute Infantry Regiments as well as the Glider Infantry of the 82nd Division are represented here. Images included on this video are of soldiers of the 82nd loading Gliders, and helping each other suit up before loading the jump planes. Then the first days of the invasion are shown as mixed units of the 82nd and 101st hold towns like St. Mere Eglise and St. Marcouf. Many images show wounded men being attended to at the 128th Evacuation Hospital and of officers questioning German POWs. The key town of Ettienville is represented as the GIs and commanding officers of the 82nd walk through town after it’s capture and celebrate with the local French people. There is also coverage from the action of the Division at Hill 131in the Foret de Mont Castre. Next the division loads large LST transports for a boat ride back to England. Finally the 82nd Division marches for a review by Gen. Eisenhower after returning to England.
