Infantry Division: Invasion of Normandy Series: Volume XV
The 90th Infantry Division, also known as “Tough Ombres”,
was 1 of only 13 American infantry divisions used in the invasion
of France that began on June 6th 1944 and continued through
the battle of Normandy. The contents of this video show the
action, as was recorded by the 165th and 166th Signal Companies,
during this historic operation. The footage represented in this
video is intended to be strictly that of the 90th Infantry Division
and only shows other unit footage when two or more units are
intertwined. This video covers from June 8th , the day the bulk
of the Division was landed on Utah Beach, to the end of August,
after the successful closing of the “Falaise Gap”.
Images included on this video are of soldiers of the 358th Infantry
exiting their LST landing craft and marching inland. Men of
the 90th Division move through elements of the 82nd Airborne
near St. Mere Eglise as they continue to attack west. Some jeeps
and men of the division can be seen entering the town of Pont
le Abbe. Medics of the 90th work on wounded GIs as tanks and
infantry fight near Hill 122. Wounded Americans and Germans
are taken to the 128th Evacuation Hospital for surgery. Next,
replacements for the division load trucks of the 90th after
checking their equipment. Follow the 90th as they race south
toward Le Mans after the breakout of “Operation Cobra”.
Gen. Raymond McLain watches his troops of the 90th move through
Alencon to close the “Falaise Gap” at Chambois under
the control of Patton’s Third Army. Finally elements of
the 359th capture thousands of Germans by shutting the trap
at Chambois, thus ending the battle of Normandy. Enjoy the close
up shots of equipment, vehicles, uniforms, helmet markings,
and of the faces of the men themselves on these candid reels
of history. Add To Cart
