8th Infantry Division: Invasion of Normandy Series: Volume VIII
The 8th Infantry Division, also known as the “Pathfinders”, was a follow up division used in the invasion of France in late June. The division would land in the Utah Beach sector, and quickly move to support the actions of the VIII Corps attack towards Periers. The contents of this video show the action as was recorded by the 165th and 166th Signal Photo Companies, during this historic operation. The footage in this video is intended to be strictly that of the 8th Infantry Division and only shows other unit footage when two or more units are intertwined. This video contains footage covering the time from May 1944, when the division was still in Ireland, to August 1944 when the 8th Division takes part in the exploitation of the breakout from Operation “Cobra”. Images included on this research video are soldiers of the 8th Infantry Division as they test the waterproofing of vehicles in Ireland. General McMahon visits men of the 28th Inf. in La Haye du Puits. Some MPs direct traffic and talk with French civilians. A firing battery of 155mm howitzers from the 28th F.A. fire rounds at the enemy. Troops of the 121st Inf. move forward through the hedgerows. Men of the 8th Div. have drinks at a café and take a tour of Mont St. Michel after its liberation. Finally watch the 8th move into Dinard after the breakout of Operation “Cobra”. Enjoy these close up shots of equipment, vehicles, weapons, uniforms, helmet markings, and of the faces of the men themselves on these candid reels of history.
