4th Infantry Division: Invasion of Normandy Series: Volume VI

The 4th Infantry Division, also known as the “Ivy” division, was one of only 4 American Infantry Divisions used in the invasion of France on June 6th 1944. The division would hold the responsibility of invading the Utah Beach sector on one of the bloodiest days in American history. The contents of this video show the action as was recorded by the 165th and 166th Signal Photo Companies, during this historic operation. The footage in this video is intended to be strictly that of the 4th Infantry Division and only shows other unit footage when two or more units are intertwined. This video contains footage covering the time from May, 1944, when the division was in final preparation for D-Day to the end of the Normandy campaign in early August, as the division begins a breakout for “Operation Cobra”. Images included on this research video are soldiers of the 4th Infantry Division as they receive gas masks, rations, and life belts. Then, D-Day, see the men loading equipment and vehicles into invasion craft, men as they come ashore under fire at Utah Beach, and men gathering together against the sea wall. Men of the 4th Div. liberate small towns like Montbourg and celebrate with the French civilians in its drive toward Cherbourg. General Collins, VII Corps Commander, visits the Commanding General of the 4th Div., Gen. Barton, and presents decorations to the men in Cherbourg. Next, German POWs are searched and processed by men of the 4th as medics take care of the wounded. See the rare images of Teddy Roosevelt Jr’s funeral. Finally follow the 4th Div. as it plunges into the hole created by Operation “Cobra”. Enjoy these close up shots of equipment, vehicles, weapons, uniforms, helmet markings, and of the faces of the men themselves on these candid reels of history.
