3rd Armored Division: Invasion of Normandy Series: Volume V


The 3rd Armored Division, also known as “Spearhead”, was one of the follow-up American Armored Divisions used in the invasion of France in late June. The division would land in the Omaha Beach sector, and quickly move to support the actions of the V and XIX Corps attacks in the capture of St. Lo. The contents of this video show the action as was recorded by the 165th and 166th Signal Photo Companies, during this historic operation. The footage in this video is intended to be strictly that of the 3rd Armored Division and only shows other unit footage when two or more units are intertwined. This video contains footage covering the time from June 23, 1944, as the division off-loads onto Omaha Beach, to August 4, 1944 when 3rd Armored takes advantage of the Operation “Cobra” break through. Images included on this research video are soldiers of the 3rd Armored Division as they come ashore in France. The 3rd as it is thrust into its first combat in support of the 29th Infantry Division. Troops and tanks of the division move through the Normandy hedgerow country. Blades are welded to the front of Sherman tanks to assist in breaking through the many hedges in the country side. The 3rd drives on Marigny and la Chapelle, during the initial breakout. Captured German POWs are searched and processed as American forces roll on. Finally watch the different Combat Commands strike with infantry divisions in the Breakout of Operation “Cobra” move through villages in their drive south to Avranches.
