Infantry Division: Invasion of Normandy Series: Volume I
The 1st Infantry Division, also known as “Big Red One’,
was one of only 4 American Infantry Divisions to be used in
the initial invasion of France on June 6th 1944. The division
would hold the responsibility of invading an Omaha Beach sector
on one of the bloodiest days in American history. The contents
of this video show the action as was recorded by the 165th and
166th Signal Photo Companies, during this historic operation.
The footage in this video is intended to be strictly that of
the 1st Infantry Division and only shows other unit footage
when two or more units are intertwined. This video contains
19 chapters of footage covering the time from February 1944,
to middle of August 1944. Images included on this research video
are soldiers of the 1st Infantry Division as they train for
the invasion at Wolcombe, England. Men of the 1st are seen receiving
monthly pay and lining up for a hot meal. Then, D-Day, see the
men doing calisthenics, loading equipment and vehicles into
invasion craft, men as they come ashore under fire at Omaha
Beach, and wounded men rest against the sea wall. Captured German
POWs are marched under control of the men of the 1st Division.
As Men of the 1st liberate small towns they celebrate with the
French civilians. General Eisenhower visits the Commanding General
of the 1st Division, General Heubner, and presents decorations
to the men. “Ike” then looks over some tactical
maps. German POWs are searched and processed by men of the 1st
as medics take care of the wounded. As the Americans breakthrough
the German lines during Operation Cobra, troops of the 1st ride
along with a 3rd Armored Division thrust through Marigny to
Coutances and Gavray. Finally the 1st Division liberates the
town of Le Ferte Macy, on the southern edge of the “Falaise
Gap”. Enjoy these and many more up close shots of equipment,
