General George Patton
General George Smith Patton
General Patton was born on November 11, 1885. During World War II held corps and army commands in North Africa 1942-1943, Sicily 1943 and the European Theater of Operations in 1944 and 1945. His last command was of the US Third Army of which he took command while they were in Normandy following the D-Day invasion. He died, as a result of an auto accident, on December 21, 1945.

GEN. GEORGE S. PATTON, JR., commanded the ground elements of the Western Task Force in the landings in North Africa in November 1942. In March 1943 he assumed command of the II Corps in Tunisia. In April of that year he began the work of planning the invasion of Sicily. He commanded the U.S. forces in the assault on that island. His headquarters was renamed Seventh U.S. Army after the landings in Sicily. He was brought to the United Kingdom as commander of the Third U.S. Army in the spring of 1944. It became active on the Continent on 1 August 1944 and under his direction campaigned in France, Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany, and Czechoslovakia. After the war's end he became commanding general of the Fifteenth Army. He died as a result of an automobile accident in December 1945.
