Field Marshal Erwin Rommel

Field Marshal Erwin Rommel born 15 November 1891, died 14 October 1944, a German Field Marshal in World War II was known as the Desert Fox the nickname he received while in command of the Afrika Corps in the North African Desert of 1942. Following his defeats at El Alamein by the British and Kasserine Pass by the Americans, Rommel was recalled and was tasked with the defense of Western Europe. He was instrumental in the coastal defenses of France which became known as Fortress Europe or the Atlantic Wall. His defensive strategy was to defeat the Allies on the beaches and to deny them a bridgehead. Following the Allies D-Day invasion, Rommel was linked to a failed attempt to kill Adolph Hitler; he committed suicide to avoid any repercussions to his family.

GENERALFELDMARSCHALL ERWIN ROMMEL served as an infantry officer in World War I. In August 1939 he was assigned as commandant of the Fuehrerhauptquartier, a position he held until February 1940. Rommel participated in the French campaign as commander of the Seventh Panzer Division. In February 1941 he was assigned to command the German troops assisting the Italians in North Africa. Rommel remained in Africa from September 1941 until March 1943 and commanded first Panzer Army Africa and later Army Group Africa. In the late summer of 1943 Rommel was assigned as commander of Army Group B in northern Italy. In the fall and winter of 1943 he conducted surveys of coastal defenses in the west. In January 1944 he again became commander of Army Group B in the west and retained this position until he was severely wounded in July 1944. Rommel, suspected of complicity in the plot of 20 July 1944, was forced to commit suicide in October 1944.
