95th Infantry Division

The 95th Division was activated on 15 July 1942 and reorganized at Camp Swift, Texas with the formation of the 377th Infantry Regiment, 378th Infantry Regiment and 379th Infantry Regiments all under the command of Major General Harry L. Twaddle.

World War II

The 95th Division sailed for Europe on 10 August 1944 arriving in England on 17 August. The Division moved to the European Continent on 19 September. The 95th would see its first combat on October 18 in the Moselle River bridgehead south of Metz. It is in these engagements that the Division received its nickname. In November, continued fighting in the Metz area led to the final capture of the city.

In December the 95th seized a Saar River bridge and fought in Saarlautern. The Division held this area into early February when they moved into the Netherlands. Continuing to advance, they were in Germany in March moving to the Rhine and in April found them near the Ruhr and Mohne Rivers. The 95th Infantry Division held these positions until VE Day.
