On August 9th, 1944 the 5th Infantry Division, also known as "Red Diamond", was fighting in the XX Corps of the U.S. Third Army. The division was in the process of capturing or containing the city of Angers, France.

Our Series II DVD, Liberation of Western Europe begins here and concludes at the end of November 1944 as the 5th Division is honored and given awards for the capture of the city of Metz. The contents of this video show the action as was recorded by the 166th and Signal Photo Company, during this historic operation. The military history footage in this video is intended to be strictly that of the 5th Infantry Division and only shows other unit footage when two or more units are intertwined.

The first footage found for the 5th ID was from Greencastle, England, in May, when Gen. Eisenhower makes a speech to men of the division. Then enjoy watching as the 5th Division enter and liberates Angers, France and the citizens celebrate. The division then pushes to Etampes, and Montereau, where they cross the Seine River. Next, watch as the city of Reims celebrates their liberation. Then watch as both men of the 5th Infantry and 7th Armored prepare to cross the Moselle River. See artillery units fire at Ft. Driant. View General George Patton as he visits and present awards to men of the division. Watch as troops enter and fight in the streets of Metz, and then the series closes with scenes of the division participating in the liberation parades of Metz. Many soldiers are given various awards.
