5th Armored Division

The 5th Armored Division was activated on 10 October 1941, was organized, equipped and trained until they sailed for Great Britain in February 1944 to participate in World War II.

On 24 July the Division landed on Utah Beach and was thrust into combat on 2nd August where they drove through Coutances, Avranches and Vitre and Le Mans. The 5th then turned north moving to Argentan before the closing of the Argentan-Falaise Gap.

The 5th then moved to Dreux, and passed through Paris on 30 August, continuing across the Aisne and Somme Rivers to reach the Belgian Border. Moving rapidly east they crossed the Meuse and by 14 September had breached the Siegfried Line. Entering the Hurtgen Forest in November the Division pushed to the Roer River.

They crossed the Roer at the end of February 1945 and drove to the Rhine crossing it on 30 March at Wesel. In April they were at the Elbe not far from Berlin where they defeated a number of German units when the war for the 5th Armored Division ended on VE-Day.
