301st Bombardment Group of WWII

301st InsigniaThe 301st Bombardment Group (Heavy) of the US Army Air Forces was activated on February 3, 1942. There were four bomb squadrons: 32nd BS, 352nd BS, 353rd BS, 419th BS. Flying Boeing B-17s, they moved to England in 1942. They were assigned to the Eighth AF and flew their first combat mission on September 5, 1942.

In November 1942, following Operation Torch, the invasion of North Africa, the 301st moved to Tafaroui, Algeria and formed part of the Heavy Bombardment section of the new 12th AF. Here they flew from bases Maison Blanche, Biskra, Ain M'lila, Oudua against targets from Tunis to SFax. They also intercepted convoys bound for North Africa. Additional targets were Pantelleria, Sicily and Italy.

A year later they were assigned to the newly formed 15th AF and moved to new bases in Italy. Here they attacked targets in North Italy, France, Yugoslavia, Austria and Germany. They also flew missions to Ploesti, Rumania and the oil refineries located there.

Their motto of "Who Fears" depicts three ravens with a spear through their necks, depicts the three enemy leaders of the Axis. Hitler, Mussolini and Tojo.
